I came across this podcast that hit close to home. I worked in a lot of different service industry positions before getting my start in the corporate world. It actually all started from one of my regulars at the bar I tended who was working at a consulting firm and thought I'd be a good fit for a Research position. Fast forward 5 years and I've built a nice career for myself and a home here at Jobcase where I get to hire engineers that enable this community to grow and help each other!
There are a lot of lessons to be learned from time in the service industry; multi-tasking, getting the job done with a smile in the face of adversity or stress, order of operations, social skills that help you communicate, listening skills to help you empathize...the list goes on.
It takes some time to get your foot in the door and to get the 2nd job, but once you have a solid track record employers will focus on your recent experience and you can pull anecdotes from your early-days that will humanize you in interviews and make you very relatable.
Check out this podcast and feel free to message me directly if you'd like to chat about a transition from service to Corporate 9-5...happy to help!
